Us and Them: Influencers and Their Followers

Opening Instagram can be overwhelming at the worst of times, but during a global pandemic? Gut wrenching. Whilst millions of people have been dying throughout the world due to Covid-19, some of our favourite influencers and celebrities have been ramming products, holidays and events down our throats. There has always been a well established divide between influencers and celebrities and their fans and followers, but over the past year, this divide couldn’t be clearer. It’s a punch in the teeth,

Tate celebrates women in agriculture

Tate Liverpool follows the different lives and experiences of four female shepherds in its new exhibition. The Calling Sheds is an investigative artwork by LJMU student Patricia Mackinnon-Day which uncovers the little-known life of women shepherds across the United Kingdom. This project seeks to engage with their stories, whilst also connecting farm workers across rural locations amongst the British Isles. Ms Mackinnon-Day has installed four sheds, with one in England, Republic of Ireland, Sc

Sleep-out held to help city’s homeless

A sleep-out in aid of Liverpool’s homeless community attracted loyal supporters on Friday as people camped out to show their solidarity. The charity holds the event annually to help the homeless and this year it was staged at the St James in the City Church in Upper Parliament Street, attracting more than 150 people. Dave Carter, the CEO of the Whitechapel Centre which organised the event, told JMU Journalism: “We have found an ever-increasing number of people who are finding themselves homele

Internalised Misogyny and Me

I don’t think that I identify as a ‘girly girly’ as such, and I have for a long time tried to shape my image around anything other than that. For what? Given’s book really made me think about what it is that makes me pull away from the typically feminine qualities that women have. Is it a fear that if I present myself as a ‘girly girl’, I will be seen as ‘just a girl’ and not ‘a girl who can’? For example, I stay away from bright colours, especially ones that have ‘girly’ connotations. I hardly

Lana Del Rey - 'Norman Fucking Rockwell!' | Classic Record Review

Looking back at arguably Lana’s best ever record in NFR Norman Fucking Rockwell. The album by Lana Del Rey, which follows Lust For Life released two years prior, seems to capture dreamy remnants of a summer shared by two lovers, was a hit when released lin 2019. The long awaited album emulates the California dreams and hot summer nights that Del Rey focusses most of her work on, but her sixth studio album trumps them all. The title of the album in itself is typical Lana Del Rey, the use of em

The Best Musical Remedies for Lockdown / Article

Music has been the voice of reason throughout the first national UK lockdown, and now, the second. Here are my top five lockdown tracks which have kept me sane (for the moment). Despite the country-pop singer songwriter releasing her eighth studio album in July of this year (2020), Cardigan is a song I only discovered recently, much to my regret. The lead single from Folklore, Swift’s lockdown project album, with over 160 million streams on Spotify, the song explores the loss of an old lover, a

Fashion and the global crisis -what happens now?

Since the 24th of March of this year, the United Kingdom has been living in times that will come to be known as alien in the history books. The country, since this date, has issued an immediate lockdown of all ‘non- essential’ travel, and gatherings, with shops and food venues amongst those affected. But what about our fashion world? What happens now? The pressure to have a perfect lockdown outfit is real, and with online influencers selling their idea of the perfect fit, it is hard to ignore.

Gender and fashion

There is no “guide”, as such, on how to break the normalities and gender expectations of fashion. From the moment we are born, girls are swaddled in pink and boys in blue. Men wear suits, women, skirts and dresses. In this new era of gender fluidity, fashion has started to follow the unwritten rule of anything goes. The new decade is a promise of innovating, fresh, forward thinking fashion. It is a promise of acceptance, and of fashion which breaks the boundaries and limitations of what gender i

Casting call has gone out for Scousers to be filmed in Liverpool

A casting call has gone out for Scousers to be part of a production filming in Liverpool - but you need some very specific skills in order to apply. Casting Collective, a website which shares calls for actors and extras across the UK, is listing a new call for a Liverpool production. The "major action feature" is set to begin filming in Liverpool in March of this year, and advertises a "good rate of pay". But anyone hoping to apply and kick off their film career needs to be able to prove they

Merseyrail customers say what they really think about new trains

Merseyrail customers are looking forward to the new and improved trains, which are expected to be running on the network by Autumn this year. Yesterday the Liverpool ECHO was given a first look inside the new trains, which have cost the Liverpool City Region Combined Following the sneak peak on-board the trains, the ECHO spoke to Merseyrail customers, at Liverpool's Central station, to get their take on the new service. Chloe Church, 34, from Speke said: "The new trains look good. The current

D-day for Northern Rail and the future of its failing service

The future of Northern Rail's failing service will be decided upon today. A decision by The Department for Transport is expected to be announced on the future of the rail franchise. The Department said the decision will result in the service “either being taken on by the Operator of Last Resort or handed back to Northern as a Direct Award. "Transport for the North has been calling for the OLR as the only way to rebuild confidence and trust among passengers.” The decision comes after Secretar
